Satoshi Tomiie plays an integral part in one of dance music’s biggest legacies. A top DJ, producer and owner of Saw Recordings, Tomiie is also a member (along with David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Hector Romero and GM, Judy Weinstein) of the legendary Def Mix crew. Those in the know can attest to the fact that dance music would simply not be the same without their influence; and through all the ups and downs of the industry, this team always pushes back stronger. The New York City-by-way-of-Tokyo based Tomiie feels particularly inspired these days and drops a techno monster with the release (under the guise of MES) of “Back To Basics.” On the flip, Motorcitysoul adds some Detroit flavor to the mix
“Back To Basics” is about digging deep and searching for the one feeling or moment that inspired your love of music. Do you remember the smile you had on your face when you heard something fresh and new for the first time? Remove all the inhibitions and let loose the way you used to. For Satoshi Tomiie, “Back To Basics” is not about revisiting the past just to create something retro or ironic, but rather, he’s referencing key moments of his musical life to create for the future. No rules, no limits. See it. Hear it. Feel it.
“Back To Basics” is released through Satoshi Tomiie’s own label, Saw Recordings. Established in 2001, Tomiie views the label as a forum for experimentation and creativity regardless of style; just great music. To date, Saw has released nearly 80 singles, four artist albums and was among the first to release tracks from the likes of Chab, Guy Gerber, Jim Rivers, Nick Chacona, Nathan Fake and Lexicon Avenue.
In addition to the releases on Saw (including his own mix compilations ES and ES-B), Tomiie is responsible for the all-time dance music classic “Tears” (w/ Frankie Knuckles) and the critically acclaimed debut artist album Full Lick (2000) featuring the outstanding anthem “Love In Traffic” (with ex-Sneaker Pimps singer Kelli Ali.) Tomiie also mixed the fastest and highest selling edition in Global Underground’s Nubreed Series (2002); he mixed the first album of Renaissance’s 3D series (2006); and followed it up with Renaissance: The Masters Series Vol. 9 (2007) and Renaissance: The Masters Series – Satoshi Tomiie (2008). When not running the label, producing or remixing music, Tomiie can be found manning the decks of the finest international clubs.
